Troopers slay escapee, wound second

SOMERS – State police killed one escapee from a Tennessee prison and critically wounded another Sunday in a fiery gun battle that erupted when the fugitives were chased and cornered on a dead-end residential street.

Authorities said the chase began at about noon when one of the convicts, looking for the home of a relative in the area, stopped to ask a state trooper for directions.

A third Tennessee escape, a convicted murderer who had been traveling with the others but was not with them Sunday, was believed to be in the area and is “armed and “extremely dangerous,” a state police spokesman said…
